Could I teach myself piccolo using a Essential Elements Flute book and a tuner?
Been playing Alto Sax for 4 years... Cant play flute because its to long for my asian arms.
Essential Elements is a BAND instruction book, the purpose of which is to get a herd of kids all playing *something, anything* together as quickly as possible. Such as *all* compromises are, these are notoriously bad for almost all individual instruction - they meet the need of the herd. To play the piccolo correctly, 99 percent of your education is on the FLUTE - you transfer to the piccolo when and if your skills are excellent - especially your embouchure. I will skip the rest of the sad *why not* story - but let it suffice that the short answer to your question is NO. Want a longer answer? NO WAY.
You can easily play flute if you get one with a curved head - look at Jupiter Prodigy, for example. PERFECT for people with short arms, bad necks, etc. Almost all pros, even the really tall ones, play a curved head for alto flute - and EVERYBODY plays curved head or vertical for bass! SO - you are just ahead of the curve ( yea - I guess I meant that pun . . .)
