Can putting cello rosin on a bass bow mess the bow up?
I put cello rosin on my bass bow that wasn't making any sound and now my bow still doesn't make any sound even though I've put a lot of rosin on it. Is it because it's rosin for a different instrument? If not, why is it not making any sound? Thanks!
Rosin is basically Tree Sap. It is cleaned, refined and dried into a cake, but it is still tree sap. They make different grades, colors, thicknesses and purities but at the end of the day, it is still the stuff that makes your pants and hands sticky when you climb a tree. If your bow is not making any sound it is usually because your bow has to be primed, cleaned, or re-haired.
To prime your bow, place the cake of rosin in your hand and draw the bow back and forth across it until the bow starts to pull against the rosin, usually 50 - 150 times.
To clean your bow, take it to a competent luthier and ask them to do it for you. They will usually tell you that it is less expensive to re-hair your bow, but if they do offer a cleaning service and they actually recommend it, it might be worth a try.
To re-hair your bow, you still take it to a competent luthier who has the jig, hanks of hair, tools, plugs, and expertise to deal with this cumbersome and potentially time consuming task.
I will now state a couple of obvious things that you know already, just in case. Never let the hair of the bow touch your skin. The oil from your skin creates dead spots which will cause the bow to slide across the string without making the string vibrate. Always keep the bow in the case when it is not being used. Rosin dries out over time and becomes that thin fine dust that it almost impossible to get off your instrument and out of your case. Never let anyone touch your rosin. You get the same problem with the oil from the skin, but in this case, you are actually grinding that oil into the hair of your bow while you think you are adding rosin! I see this happening more often than even I would like to admit. People just seem to have a fascination for rosin and want to touch it. They also tend to want to use it to play their tambourines and glass armonicas (spelled properly even though Yahoo cannot comprehend this) and they never seem to understand that they really should buy their own.
Finally, when you have a problem like this, the fastest and surest thing to do is to take it to your teacher, director, or luthier. They can narrow the possibilities down very quickly and will usually give you an accurate course of action without causing you any embarrassment. There are other, less common possibilities that I won't go into, but in the unlikely event that they are the case, those people are your best bet for a quick diagnoses. In any case, I hope this helps.
As far as ordinary rosin not working on a string bass bow, I went into my classroom this morning, took a brand new string bass bow that I purchased from Brook Mays when they went out of business a year or so ago, pulled out a three dollar (actually less) cake of Super Sensitive rosin right out of the top left hand drawer of my desk, primed the bow with the Super Sensitive Rosin, applied the bow to the String Bass, and it worked just fine. It is perfectly acceptable to recommend a certain type of rosin if it works better, but claiming that it won't work is just too darned easy to disprove. Thousands of Elementary and Middle School teachers know better. Assigning mystical properties to tree sap is just specious on it's face!
